No sew Decorating Ideas for Cowhides!
For the cost of a hide, you can have a brand new leather couch. Drape over an old sofa to make it look brand new. If the couch is longer than the hide and the wrong color or has print upholstery that doesn't work with the cowhide, just use a cheap solid fabric that will not fight with the colors in the cow hide and will compliment the other existing colors in your room. Start at one end and tuck, pin, and/or staple the fabric to keep the fabric in place - no need to do a perfect job - you won't see much when you're done. When you've got the base fabric in place, just drape the cowhide over sofa. Work with the shape of the cowhide to give lines you want to the couch. Most times, the cowhide will be large enough to cover most of the front and back of a single sofa. If the sofa back is to a wall, you may choose to cut some off the back side to use to cover the arms. I had one on an old battered sofa for years and everyone always commented on how lovely that old battered thing was! Finally, I got a new one, but found I so missed the look that I draped my new sofa with the old cowhide! Better than a slip cover! No sewing or cu
tting required!
Do you have a large piece of furniture but no wall to put it against? Cut the cowhide to the shape of the back of the piece. Then you can place it anywhere in the room. Create a room divider or put a different piece of furniture or even artwork on the side you've covered with the cowhide!
Make a headboard for your bed out of plywood and 2x2s covered with cowhide. Measure your bed and decide how high and how wide you want your headboard. Take your measurements to Home Depot or Lowes and have them cut a piece of plywood to your measurements. Don't get the heavy plywood! Have them cut 2x2's (or larger) to attach the back side of the plywood so that it will come out at least 2" from the wall. Get wood screws long enough to go through the plywood, the 2x2s' or whatever you decide to use for your frame and to secure the frame to the studs in the wall. Ask the person at the hardware store what size you need. If you don't have an electric drill, you need one so get one. (or you can borrow one from a friend). Lastly, decide on a trim design - quarter round, half round, shoe mold, upholstery tacks, whatever and get finishing nails or tacks appropriate. The hardware people will advise you.. Have pieces cut so that you can use them to tack around the headboard after you've covered it and attached it to the wall. Use spray polyurethane, spray paint or stain to get the trim pieces to the color you want before you attach them. The paint or stain should be dry when you attach them. Use nails or wood screws to create a back frame for your plywood.
Take the piece to the wall. I like tape, but you could use a marker. You want to mark where the top of the piece will be placed. I like to use painter's tape for things like this because it is easy to see whether it is level. Using a level is a good idea. If you have one of those electronic level gizmos, I envy you! Locate the studs in the wall and mark them with tape above where the headboard will be placed. Find the center point of the headboard and mark it. Find the center of the space above the bed and mark it. Attach the frame to the wall with wood screws. Be sure to secure to the wood studs behind the drywall! Measure the entire piece with the frame attached. You'll want to wrap the cowhide around the plywood and cover one side of the 2x2 as well - all the way to the wall! Some people cut it all out first - some attach one side and cut as they go. I'm a cut as I go! To make smooth corners, cut the hide from the edge of the frame to the wall - straight, not at an angle. If your frame is 2", your cut is 2".
Use a staple gun or upholstery tacks to secure the hide to the frame all the way around. Then attach your trim. You're done.
Use as a bed cover in your LQ horse trailer or ranch bedroom. Spreads never look quite right in a gooseneck, but a cow hide looks awesome as a mattress cover! No sewing or cutting required! Just tuck it in on the end or let it hang out to show the natural lines of the cowhide
Redo your RV or LQ trailer - headboard, cornices, and cabinet faces! Cover those cheap ugly cornices in your RV or LQ. Just rip off that outdated old upholstery, glue down the cowhide to the cornice frame, and reattach the L brackets with a screwdriver. A real do it yourself project. Real simple and real quick.
Recover cabinet faces in your RV, office. Look what cow hide did to spruce up worn out cabinet faces in an LQ trailer. All you need is a tape measure, scissors, & a staple gun. No need to take the cabinet faces off the hinges!
Now I wasn't in favor done before I had a real vote! The toilet and cabinet are covered in two different colors of cow hide. The cabinet is in brindle and the seat in brown and white. No one ever noticed that the hides were different. I must admit, it was pretty cute! Looked much better than in the picture!

I'm on a mission to make my life simpler - of course that doesn't mean that I give up those finer things that are important to me. My mother gave me the family silver some years ago and I no longer use it. My son doesn't want it! So it sits on the buffet, wrapped in plastic laundry bags. A friend once asked me if I planned to ever take the plastic off. My answer was sure, if she was going to clean it!
Anyway, as part of my mission to simplify my life. I had the upholstery ion the horse trailer done in denim.
Denim looks and feels better with age and dirt doesn't affect its look a great deal . I liked it so much that I put denim bedding in the barn apartment - comforter, bedspread, bed skirts, curtains, etc. It's easy care - no ironing and it is classic - but it's a lot of blue. In a animal friendly, child friendly bedroom, where throw pillows will actually be thrown to a floor where guests have tracked in everything you can find on a ranch, these throw pillows made of faux cowhide were purchased as a practical and economical decorating solution. The surprise was that they really POP in this very blue room!
Use them to prop yourself up in bed to read , and when you get sleepy, toss them on the floor without worry. Ideal for your little cowboy or cowgirls bedroom too! Very soft and cuddly. Polyfleece so I wash them though I'm not sure what the manufacturer recommends.
Though made fully sewn on all sides, I can request them as a slip cover for an existing pillow or your stuffing and I can also request a zipper on one side for an extra charge.
