Feeding Instructions & Care

Visually monitor weight daily.  A single handful of feed with supplements is not too little if the horse appears over weight to you.  It is always better to err on the side of too little rather than too much.

In summer, everyone is heavier & we want to keep weight off.  In winter, a little extra weight is not bad.

It is hot all horses get Electrolytes

Check all water tanks every day!

Dulce & Moda Check mares ready to foal for bagging and waxing.
Squirrels drown it tanks & foul water.

It happens more often than you would think and never when you check the water every day.  It happens when you forget to check and the water level gets low enough for them to get stuck.

Check all water tanks and bowls every day.  Horses, dogs and cats.  Things can drown in the water and then the horses have no water!

Be sure to check all the water faucets before you leave to make sure that they are off.  I know you will, but I have to say this because I'm always leaving them on and kicking myself. If I'm out of town, turn the water off at the house.

Drain clean and refill each tank at least once a week!  We normally do the end of the week.  Write the date down on the chart.

Cosmos Cat

Siamese

Cosmos, our house cat, will be inside, hiding probably.  Open a can of wet food for him (bottom shelf in the pantry) and make sure he has some dry food. He eats on the kitchen counter by the fridge.  Isn't that sanitary? Oh well, the dry food will be on the pantry floor.  Ask Pete to show you.  It is in a bag now and he may move it.  Make sure Cosmos has water.  His liter box is automatic so you won't need to worry about it.
Three Dogs Callie and Sky. Dog food is on the floor in the pantry in a clear tote with a blue top.  Give each dog (count on three even if Sadie is not around) about 4 cups a day.

Please refresh their water also.

Venus and Mars, the new barn cats will be in the barn.  I guess we should leave the barn door cracked so that they can come and go. I put them in the barn at night and close the barn doors to protect them from the coyotes so if possible, do that, if not leave the barn doors slightly cracked  Their food is on top of the work bench.  Their litter box is on the floor near the back door.  Refresh water.
Old barn cats Woody and Jessie eat in the tool room.  They get dry food.  Don't put too much out. Pick up leftovers at night if you come back to feed. Their food draws skunks!  Their feeder is on the counter by the small refrigerator.  The food is in the gray container on the floor.  Put your feet on each side of the container to brace it and then try to unscrew it. That is the only way. Refresh water.

Check fence gates, barn gates, & barn doors again before you leave. Check Gates Again
Check the gates and doors to be sure that they are locked.  If any horses get out, it could be fatal for a stallion.  Mares and stallions are never in pastures next to each other -- with the exception of pregnant mares and mares with babies -- if the mares with babies are not in season.
Reset alarm. I will call you with the alarm code.  You just push it in and the light will turn green if all the doors are closed. If they are not closed it will just stop beeping -- it will still be off.

If a mare gets stuck in the creep feeder or if anything else happens that you can't handle.  Call Rondell Lewis. He lives in THAT GREEN house with orange trim on the right as you come into Adams Grove with all the cars out front.  His number is 344-9541. His cell 581-0142.  He will come and get the tractor and get them out.  Don't forget to tell him that the feeder is chained to the back  posts. I did call him and tell him that you were going to feed the horses and about the creep feeder.
